IMPAC5, the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress, took place from February 3 to 8, 2023 in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory, Vancouver, BC. The Congress was a global forum that brought together ocean conservation professionals and high-level officials to inform, inspire and act on ocean conservation through marine protected areas.
Indigenous IMPAC5 was series of Indigenous-specific activities and events at the congress. Developed by the IMPAC5 Indigenous Working Group, Indigenous IMPAC5 events and activities complemented and enhanced the programming of the overall IMPAC5 Congress, and the experience of Indigenous participants.
Sa̱nala convened the IMPAC5 Indigenous Working Group, made up of representatives from First Nations and Indigenous-serving organizations across the country. Together, Sa̱nala and the Indigenous Working Group co-developed a series of culturally appropriate and inclusive Indigenous-led events and activities, open to over 450 Indigenous delegates.
